On the road to the West we will pass many landmarks both natural and man-made. A short way from Thurso we pass the famous dome of Dounreay, an experimental fast breeder nuclear reactor, built in the 1950's and now being decommissioned.

The coastal scenery, with lots of beautiful beaches and the background of the Sutherland hills, is spectacular.

Many of the small villages dotted along the west coast road were formed during the "Highland Clearances". This particularly cruel episode in Scottish history both inspired and shaped not only the history of Scotland but that of the many places around the world where those forced from their birthplaces settled.

Learn about the clearances with a walk around Melvich and Portskerra and a tour of the Strathnaver clearances museum.

Travel through the majesty of the Sutherland hills and along Strath Halladale to Forsinard.

Caithness Biodiversity Collection - Iain Sarjeant

See how the unique landscape of the "flow country" was formed with a walk through the bog at the RSPB centre at Forsinard.

This tour will require some walking (all easy). Boots and suitable clothing are recommended.

Tour leaves Thurso about 9am and returns at about 5pm
