From Thurso we will take a leisurely drive, on in-land roads most visitors would never see, to the Castle of Mey where we will spend most of the morning.
The Queen Mother made this her home for 50 years, spending happy holidays every summer. Principal rooms, bedrooms, gardens and animal centre are open to view.
In the afternoon you can see how the other half lived. Mary Ann's cottage is a small croft house reflecting the life of a family that lived there for three generations.
This historic gem is often overlooked by tourists and provides a real sense of recent local history.
The coastal route from the Castle of Mey to Thurso is a joy in itself. You will pass such a variety of landscape, from rich agricultural land, sweeping beaches, beautiful lochs, rugged cliffs and an expanse of horizon looking over to Orkney and beyond.
On the way back to Thurso we will stop at Castletown where we will follow the flagstone trail which outlines how this important local industry brought wealth to the area by exporting our natural rock to far flung places.
Details shown do not include all stops made.
Please note this tour is not available Tuesday 2nd August and Tuesday 9th August as the Castle of Mey is closed and an alternative will be available.
Tour leaves Thurso about 9am and returns at about 5pm
