Peat cut and laid out to dry

From Thurso we head south along the Thurso River through Halkirk, leaving the fertile agricultural area, into the heart of the county and the famous "Flow Country" to Spittal. Stopping en route to see how the peat lands are used.

Sheets of flagstone are cut from the face. Learn about the formation of the rocks that dominate our coastal landscape at Spittal Mains Quarry. Watch how they are quarried, cut and used today in the Caithness Stone Industry.

The minibus will take the road south to Latheron and up the coast road to Lybster for a lunch stop at the Lybster harbour museum.

Work off your lunch with two short walks to stone structures dating some 4,000 years. These are plentiful in the county and we will take you to the Camster cairns and Achavanich Stones, probably some of the best examples.

Details shown do not include all stops made.

Please note this tour will require some walking (all easy). Boots and suitable clothing are recommended.

Tour leaves Thurso about 9am and returns at about 5pm
